How Our GPA Calculator Works

Understanding GPA Calculation

Grade Point Average (GPA) is a numerical representation of your academic performance. It's calculated by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total number of credit hours attempted.

GPA Formula:

GPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Add Your Courses

Click the "Add Course" button to create entries for each of your classes. You can add as many courses as needed.

  2. Enter Course Details

For each course, provide the course name (optional), credit hours, and either the letter grade or percentage.

  3. Calculate Your GPA

Click the "Calculate GPA" button to see your semester GPA. The calculator will automatically convert your grades to grade points.

  4. Review Results

View your GPA, total credits, and total grade points. The visual meter helps you see where your GPA falls on the scale.

  5. Make Adjustments

You can edit any course details and recalculate to see how different grades would affect your GPA.

Understanding Grade Points

Each letter grade corresponds to a specific grade point value. Here's how our calculator converts your grades:

Letter Grade Percentage Range Grade Points
A+ 97-100% 4.0
A 93-96% 4.0
A- 90-92% 3.7
B+ 87-89% 3.3
B 83-86% 3.0
B- 80-82% 2.7
C+ 77-79% 2.3
C 73-76% 2.0
C- 70-72% 1.7
D+ 67-69% 1.3
D 65-66% 1.0
F Below 65% 0.0

Example Calculation

Let's walk through an example to demonstrate how GPA is calculated:

Sample Courses:

Course Credits Grade Grade Points
Mathematics 4 A 4.0
English 3 B+ 3.3
Science 4 A- 3.7
History 3 B 3.0

Calculation Steps:

  1. Multiply grade points by credits for each course:
    • Math: 4.0 × 4 = 16.0
    • English: 3.3 × 3 = 9.9
    • Science: 3.7 × 4 = 14.8
    • History: 3.0 × 3 = 9.0
  2. Sum all grade points: 16.0 + 9.9 + 14.8 + 9.0 = 49.7
  3. Sum all credits: 4 + 3 + 4 + 3 = 14
  4. Divide total grade points by total credits: 49.7 ÷ 14 = 3.55
Final GPA: 3.55
