How Our GPA Calculator Works
Understanding GPA Calculation
Grade Point Average (GPA) is a numerical representation of your academic performance. It's calculated by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total number of credit hours attempted.
GPA Formula:
GPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

B | 83-86% | 3.0 |
B- | 80-82% | 2.7 |
C+ | 77-79% | 2.3 |
C | 73-76% | 2.0 |
C- | 70-72% | 1.7 |
D+ | 67-69% | 1.3 |
D | 65-66% | 1.0 |

Example Calculation
Let's walk through an example to demonstrate how GPA is calculated:
Sample Courses:
Course | Credits | Grade | Grade Points |
---|---|---|---|
Mathematics | 4 | A | 4.0 |
English | 3 | B+ | 3.3 |
Science | 4 | A- | 3.7 |
History | 3 | B | 3.0 |
Calculation Steps:
-
Multiply grade points by credits for each course:
- Math: 4.0 × 4 = 16.0
- English: 3.3 × 3 = 9.9
- Science: 3.7 × 4 = 14.8
- History: 3.0 × 3 = 9.0
- Sum all grade points: 16.0 + 9.9 + 14.8 + 9.0 = 49.7
- Sum all credits: 4 + 3 + 4 + 3 = 14
- Divide total grade points by total credits: 49.7 ÷ 14 = 3.55
